Manuscript Critique

My manuscript critique services involve looking at your story from the reader’s perspective. While there is some basic grammar, spelling, and punctuation checking, the main focus revolves around character development, believability, pacing, and plot holes. I look at what you excelled at, what could be improved, and what would make readers quirk their eyebrows, and say, “I don’t think John would really do that,” or “Even if they were mates and had some sort of preternatural bond pulling them together, a guy who has been very homophobic throughout the story wouldn’t be so quick to accept that he is now mated to a man, even one as effeminate as Todrick.”

Silver Manuscript Critique

The silver manuscript critique offers an overall assessment of your story from the reader’s perspective. I look at macro elements such as character development, believability, pacing, plot holes, and inconsistencies. You’ll receive a comprehensive manuscript critique (editorial letter).

Gold Manuscript Critique

In addition to the more global comments included in the silver manuscript critique, the gold manuscript critique offers more in-depth feedback with chapter-by-chapter comments, giving you my emotional reaction to each chapter of your book. It also includes a 30 min pre-critique Skype call to meet me and discuss specific areas or questions I should keep in mind while I read your story.

Platinum Manuscript Critique

Building on the gold manuscript critique, the platinum manuscript critique offers a 1 hr post-critique Skype call to go over my comments and to help you brainstorm. It also entitles you to a free review of your book on Amazon, the publisher’s website, Goodreads, and The Ribbon Marker blog when it gets published.

Developmental Edit

Developmental editing should be the first type of professional editing that gets done. It involves looking at what makes up your story: the plotline (and any plot holes), story arc, content relevance, characters’ likability and arcs, characters’ goals, motivation, and conflicts, believability, pacing, tension, unresolved threads, world building, and scene setting. Developmental editing involves taking your idea, characters, and plots, and building them into a solid foundation to base your story on.

Developmental Edit

Your story is your baby, and I want work closely with you to make sure that you get the best version of the story you wanted to tell on paper. Therefore, my developmental editing service includes a 3-hour Skype session (used all at once, or in small doses over time) to discuss your expectations, what you think you need help with, and the edits, so you are happy with the final result. It also includes an additional line edit pass after you have incorporated the initial edits.
