Why I Loved It?
Okay, so I have to start by saying that I first became a hardcore Hawaii Five-0 and McDanno (that’s Steve McGarrett/Danny “Danno” Williams slash) shipper after joining Mary Calmes’ Facebook group, Mary’s Mob. In her group, she has a bunch of weekly memes that she does, and McDanno Fridays are by far my favorite (seriously, the hardcore romance passing as a bromance makes my whole freaking week).
This fanfic, while a romance, is really focused on what makes a family and how much compromise, effort, worry, and stress it takes to actually create and maintain a family. It’s about realizing that family isn’t just blood, but the people who are willing to sacrifice and go out of their way to care for you.
I am a firm believer in the friends-to-lovers trope, so any fic or book that has characters who’ve really built that foundation of trust and commitment way before the sex and romance became an integral part of their relationship dynamic really calls to me. When it comes down to it, it is always easier to add sex to an already comfortable and solid relationship because there is that safety net that you can always go back to that awesome and really supportive platonic relationship if the sex doesn’t work out.
What I really loved about this fanfic was that it wasn’t really written in a linear fashion. Each chapter basically was like attending a therapist’s session with members of the McGarrett-Williams family, a la the beginning of Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
The flashback, retrospective vibe really enhanced the already established character development in the TV show by letting the reader see how the characters have changed (with a lot reflection and time) from when the events actually occurred in the past, and the current when they are talking to the therapist. I really like the whole emphasis on hindsight is 20/20, but also how sometimes you really do have to take the long way round to make sure that you don’t have any doubts when you reach the end goal. My inner psychologist really thrives on seeing how characters change over time, and osointricate really managed to showcase that in this fic.
Seriously, it is hard to write a review for this fic because there is so much going and such a large cast of characters to work with. What I can tell you is that it’s a lovely, fluffy, seriously feel good story about family and finding/creating one that really works for you, despite what others might see looking in.

So, are you a hardcore McDanno shipper like myself, or are you still maintaining that it’s just a serious bromance? Me thinks they’re the gay version of Rizzoli & Isles…
