Why I love it?
I love this fanfic because it actually novel length. It is really, really, long. Long fanfiction pieces give the authors so much room to grow. It also gives them time for them develop their own writing style, and actually come up with some real original content. Short fanfic pieces tend to be more focused on relationship dynamics during a particular scene, which is wonderful in its own right, but it’s still not as wonderful as someone who’s taken the wizarding world and made it even better.
I first started reading this fanfic because I liked the synopsis. It imitated that Harry was going to be given a purpose after Hogwarts. The way J.K. Rowling left the book series, readers’ didn’t really know what would happen in Harry’s future, but we knew he lived happily ever after. As nice as that version of events would’ve been, it would’ve been too unrealistic given that Harry was a war hero. Most war heroes kind of snap after war. They don’t really know what to do with themselves, feeling like they need a purpose to their life. This fic set out to remedy that, so that Harry still had a purpose and a reason to keep going (Ginny had nothing compared to seven years of fighting Voldemort).
I also really liked the couple. Oh my God, sexy, powerful, Harry, with commanding Snape (stops and fans herself). I really enjoyed this couple, because I felt like both characters had to been thoroughly taken advantage of throughout the entire series. Snape was working between two masters, even though Dumbledore wanted it to seem like he’s saved Snape from the death eater lifestyle. Harry went from working like a dog for the Dursley’s, to having to work for Dumbledore and his agenda against Voldemort. Had Dumbledore truly been the benevolent old headmaster he pretended to be, he would’ve just kept Harry out of the limelight as much as possible. Having been one of the leaders of the wizarding world before he passed, he could’ve just laid down the law and said “Hey guys, I’m protecting Harry from all of you crazy people who want to use him as a scapegoat”.
This fanfic shows how people can only see what other people want them to see. Only saw Dumbledore as the greatest leader of Grindelwald and this gentle kind old professor, and that’s how he wanted himself to be portrayed, going to great lengths to maintain that image. Nobody ever noticed how manipulative he was. Manipulations often only run as long as there’s someone there to maintain them, and the fact that all of Dumbledore’s manipulations fell apart, and were exposed after he had passed away, was brilliant. I also loved the possibility of evil Poppy Pomfrey. Most people think that healthcare givers have got to be the nicest people around, but here a Poppy that was, mean, vindictively evil, and strangely enough, related to Arabella Figg. She was the character who was supposed to have maintained the lies of Dumbledore’s creation after his death, but she was too accustomed to just being the lackey who once in a while covered something up.
The plot line for the story was really good. I liked how the goblins lured Harry to Gringotts under false pretenses. I guess they had realized that Harry wasn’t getting any of his mail. They made me wish that my banker was that diligent. The fact that they were so quick to call the healer, and get all those love potions out of the system, was just so awesome. Once they had the opportunity to write Dumbledore’s wrongs with regards to Harry, they also made quick work of righting Snape’s affairs. Goblins have always been very forthcoming about their sense of right and wrong, what with their little “beware thieves of what will happen to you if you steal to us from us” poster in front of the bank. The brilliant plot twist was when we discovered that Dumbledore hadn’t been the mastermind behind all of these manipulations. At the end of the day, Dumbledore was just as much of a lackey as Poppy Pomfrey had been his. It kind of makes us understand why he thought it was acceptable for him to basically subjugate Severus Snape.
Now, I don’t want to give away too much, but I guess I already did what with the reveal of that there is a higher mystery person, but I think I’m going to let you read to the fanfic for yourself and figure it out. The way that it ended was just mind blasting. Jadedragon36 really took us on a fantastical journey that I hadn’t envisioned when I started this fic.
