Why I love it?
I love this fic because we get to see young, sweet Severus Snape, before he suffered at the hands of his father, the Marauders, Voldemort, and even the great Albus Dumbledore himself.
Snape’s pensieve memories in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, invoked feelings of pity and a little bit of shame at the bystander effect most clearly demonstrated. His mother tried to protect him from his father, but ultimately she chose her love for an abusive drunk over the love for her only child (why she didn’t leave his worthless hide, I do not know). Lily, his only honest friend (because we all know that Lucius does alliances and not friendship), turned her back on him, and allowed the abuse from the Marauders continue. Sure, she couldn’t have stopped them (Hogwarts teachers were terribly remiss in reprimanding the Marauders’ life-endangering antics), but just simply having someone to fight for is a heady thing. That’s why Severus joined the Death Eaters after Lily wouldn’t forgive him; he figured that it was better to be some place where he was only wanted for his skills as a potions master, rather than some place where his sole worth was to be ridiculed for sport.
Having Harry come in and not only be Severus’ “one good thing”, but also empower and support Severus in learning how to defend himself, helped Severus grow in to a more confident person. Harry’s continued support later on showed The Marauders that Severus is worth defending and taught them the very valuable lesson of “do unto others as you want done unto you”.
I also love the fact that the fic perpetuated the concept of Hogwarts being a sentient safe haven. Where most students thought of Hogwarts as just a place of learning, for students like Harry, Draco, and Severus, whose home life was the stuff of nightmares, it was a place of safety and gaining some distance from imminent harm. To take it a step further, and to say Hogwarts actively aids those who reside in it and respect what Hogwarts represents, is heart warming to say the least.
Plus, protective time-traveller Harry taking care sweet vulnerable Severus makes me grin.
